March 27, 2010: Party Poker

Today was fun. We slept in, because Lauren's friend was unable to meet us. We had breakfast at 9:30, and made some new friends. I don't know their names (this appears to be a common problem for me) but one was from Spain, one from Mexico, and one from Russia? They were very nice, and appeared to be about our age.

Then we went to the Pantheon. We stopped for gelato beforehand (notice a trend? ha) and it was amazing. I got mint chocolate gelato--best choice ever, except for maybe strawberry! We didn't spend too much time at the Pantheon--plus there was scaffolding over half of the outside. Lame. We wandered into a few churches, like the Chiesa di Gesu. The churches here are gorgeous--all marble and gold-covered.

We decided to get some pizza (for an acutal lunch) and went to eat at the hostel. We all really want to check our email/facebook, but there's only one computer. We share well, but the old men playing "party poker" don't--they are ALWAYS on the computer. They don't speak much English, so it's hard to ask them how much longer they'll be using the computer.

After lunch, we decided to try to find the Baths of Caracalla. I was told that they are really pretty, but they aren't on any of my three partial maps. We did find them, but didn't want to pay to go in, because we didn't know much about them. We decided to do some shopping. I'm now done with gifts--I have something for my mom, dad, brother, and sister, as well as a gift for Becca. That's all I NEED--now I can just look and stop buying (ha). But I think I might buy myself a scarf in Madrid...

After our shopping, we just sat outisde for about an hour. It was SO nice out! We didn't want to go back to the hostel. So we relaxed outside and talked. Then we went to dinner. We all had the same thing--gnocchi with 4 cheese--gnocchi are basically potato dumplings. It was pretty good, but our waiter seemed to be avoiding us...

We stayed at the restaurant for 2 hours. It had fun music playing, so I didn't mind. We ordered dessert--tiramisu, cannolis, and gelato. We waited about 30 minutes to get asked about dessert, and another 30 minutes for our bill--our waiter disappeared. We had to ask a different waiter for our bill, since ours literally didn't come back. He thought it was funny--or we were funny, I'm not sure. The other waiter's name was Salvatore. It made me smile.

After dinner, we went back to our hostel. We waited forever for a chance to use the internet. I'm still not sure if we'll get a chance to use it. It's almost 9, and those old men are STILL playing party poker. So we'll see, hopefully we are able to get online. We want to check our flights, and hostels, etc.

At any rate, we'll be hanging out, just checking the computer every so often. We're getting up super early tomorrow to go to the Vatican. We know there will be lines, plus we were told that it closes at noon due to it being Palm Sunday. I think we're going to walk there--it doesn't look that far. Plus we'll have all afternoon to recuperate!
