Mar 22, 2010: Adventures in Paris

Today was a long, long day. But really, I loved it. We woke up around 8:30, and had a free breakfast: juice, french roll, croissant, cereal. Best free breakfast ever! I could live on bread. Then we decided to walk to the Louvre. The walk didn't actually take too long. We did struggle with figuring out how to get in--that building is massive!

We spent around 4 hours canvassing the Louvre. We saw the Mona Lisa...and a ton of other stuff. All of the captions were in French (and ONLY French) so I couldn't honestly saw WHAT I saw. But it was pretty impressive.

I was kind of dumb today, and forgot my camera. Luckily Melisa brought hers, and promised that I could take all of her pictures from today. After the Louvre, we walked forever to find a place for lunch. I actually had a crepe, covered in hot fudge, with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Very nutritious, I know.

We wandered to the Eiffel Tower, to take some pictures while it was light out. It was a lot of fun. We spent quite a bit of time finding different angles to take pictures from, etc. Then, we walked to the Arc de Triomphe. We did a few laps around that, getting pictures at pretty much all angles.
From the Arc de Triomphe, we did a lot more walking. We knew there was a twin/replica of the Statue of Liberty. It was pictured on our map, so we went on a mission to find it. It took forever, but we made it! Then, we completed a little circle, heading back toward the Eiffel Tower as the sun was going down. We stopped for dinner, but it took us forever to decide on a place to eat. Prices were too high, we didn't like certain foods, etc. I really don't enjoy figuring out meals, because no one wants to make any decisions. I eventually do, since I get tired of wandering when we are all hungry.

So we found this cafe/restaurant, and decided to split two meals between the four of us. Maybe that's rude here? Our waiter seemd confused and offended--he was terribly rude to us. But the food was good, and we got to sit inside until it got dark outside.

Then we walked back to the Eiffel Tower. We're told it's much prettier by night, so we wanted to see it both during the day and during the night. It was pretty gorgeous. Looking at the buildings, people, and traffic, it's easy to think that I could be in any city. But then when I turn and see the Eiffel Tower, all lit up and glowing, it really hits me...this is PARIS.

At the Eiffel Tower (take 2) we had a long photoshoot. I think the earlier one was longer, maybe. It's hard to say, but we had a ton of fun. We did pictures so that it looked like we were holding the Eiffel Tower, or kssing it, or being crushed by it. Definitely fun!

Then we decided to walk back. Out map is terrible. It isn't very detailed, so we don't have all the roads on it. Plus the roads change names a lot, etc. It took forever to get back. Every so often, we stopped at benches, and just talked. I haven't had this much fun in a long time--I really enjoyed it.

Eventually though, we just wanted to be BACK. We got to the general area, but walked in circles looking for our street: Rue Mouffetard. It was incredibly frustrating, and none of us enjoyed it. We did finally make it back...around midnight--two hours after leaving the Eiffel Tower. My trusty pedometer tells me that we walked around 23 miles. It doesn't quite feel like it...yet. I showered right away, and am headed to bed now. We've planned an easy day for tomorrow: Notre Dame, the Pompidou, and possibly Sacre Cour. But who knows what could happen, or where we could end up?!
