Apr 4, 2010: Easter

We intended to go to mass today, but that never happened. There are a ton of churches everywhere--how would we PICK? Plus, none of them are in English. We ended up sleeping in and having a late breakfast.  We met Lucas around noon. We wanted to watch a parade/procession, but couldn't find the locations on our map. So instead, we went to el Rastro, the flea market that Madrid has every Sunday. All these vendors set up on a series of streets, by Puerta del Sol. It was PACKED. There were so many people. It was way too hard to shop with everyone around. We mostly just wandered through and looked around at stuff.

Then, we went back to the famous pastry shop that Lucas showed us. I love their chocolate pastries, and for 1 euro, I could eat them every day. We walked around, and found the end of a parade--playing music in Plaza Mayor. Also in the plaza were people that we've seen every day, dressed as cartoon characters: Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Shrek, Winnie the Pooh, and fat, creepy Spiderman. Not my favorite, and if I was a child, I'd be scared. Apparently fat Spiderman smokes as well. What a great role model...but then again, I'm pretty sure that EVERYONE in Europe smokes. It's so gross, and I'm really sick of inhaling smoke.

After hanging out in the plaza for a while, we went to lunch. I really love ham and cheese baguettes! Then Lucas had to leave, so Melisa and I returned to our hostel for a siesta! After napping and showering, we went to dinner. We chose to have Easter dinner at TGI Fridays. It was good to have American food on Easter, when Melisa and I were both missing home.

I was really sad to miss Easter. Both sets of my grandparents were at my house--I miss them. Plus I really just love my family. I did get to instant message them for a while. I've requested that we have another Easter when I return!
