I think we had a very successful adventure today. Melisa and I met at 9, and walked to the bus station. We hopped on a bus going from Caernarfon to Llandudno, since Conwy is a stop along the way. The bus ride took much longer than expected. We went down this road, and stopped at a few different towns. In the first one, the sign said that Conwy was in 8 miles. We have to know where it is so we can press the "stop" button, but we don't have maps of the bus routes, and so we do a lot of guessing. In the next town, the sign said that Conwy was in 7 miles, which makes sense. Then we are back on the highway for a little while...we turn off in a town, and then are going back in the direction we came from. Sign says: Conwy 2 mi. And it points in the direction of Bangor, where we started. Then we go around a roundabout, which puts us on the road we STARTED on, at a spot we had already been on. Sign says: Conwy 4 mi. And it points in the direction that we were originally going. It's a good thing I wasn't driving, or I would have been SO lost. At any rate, when we saw signs that said we were in Conwy, we got off at the first stop. Castles are easy to find.
As it turns out, the first stop is quite a hike from the castle. It's all residential, with no signs for anything. We walked a few different directions before finally asking someone. We had to take a path alongside the water, around a giant corner, before we could get to the castle (and civilization).
We did eventually reach the castle. It was a very scenic path, and it does appear that we should have waited until the bus had gone farther. But we didn't want to miss the town! Buses aren't very clear about where you are, or where they tend to stop. At any rate, it wasn't TOO cold, although it was fairly snowy, by Welsh standards.
Conwy (which is pronounced Conway) Castle was much smaller than we expected. It was pretty, and I do really enjoy visiting castles. But this will probably be one of the last ones we visit. We're going to try to find other places to go and see. It didn't take us nearly as long to explore this castle as it did for the other ones. It actually took us quite a while to figure out how to get to the castle, and how to get in. This town was a little confusing, and we ended up walking along the outside of the wall, and the outside of the castle, before turning around and trying another direction. We did figure it out before too long, being fairly smart girls.
After exploring the castle, we explored the town. As it turns out, there wasn't a lot in the town. We picked up a few postcards, played at a few random stores, and then hopped on a bus back to Bangor. Taking buses back is always much easier, since we know Bangor, and we know which place to stop at. We are going to take a Saturday and just go to random towns. We can buy an all-day pass for a route, and then stop at whatever towns we want along the way. There are some really cute little towns, and Melisa and I are excited.
I'll post a few of my favorite pictures here. There will be more on Facebook, provided it allows me to upload them. It's a little bit frustrating. Anyway, pictures:
